What is send speed/throttling?

Send speed is a way to control the speed of your campaigns send. It is particularly useful for larger sends, for example if you were sending to 100,000 plus, you could throttle the campaign to send 25,000 emails an hour.

Why use throttling?

Although restricting the number of sends is optional, for larger sends it can help in a couple of ways.

Deliverability: Sending all your emails at once for a large campaign may cause spikes in usage of IP’s. Throttling your send would avoid this possibility. Here is a dedicated article on Deliverability: https://www.e-shot.net/insights/blog/deliverability-101

Manageability: If you email includes CTAs (Calls to action) which require manual processing or you just want to avoid an overload to a website, throttling can help to stagger the workload for a more even distribution over a longer time period.

How to apply send throttling

To apply send throttling head to the advanced tab within your campaign. Here you will be able to locate an option labelled ‘Send speed/throttling’.

Applying throttling

To apply your send throttling, click the box next to ‘Control send speed?’, this will tick the box and open a box below for you to enter the number of estimated sends per hour you would like.

Control send speed tick box

The number you enter into the box is the number of contacts you want to be sent to roughly each hour. For example, if I was sending to 100,000 contacts and wanted to send across a span of around 4 hours, I would enter 25,000 into the box. As shown below this estimated to a total send time of 4 hours.

Applying throttling

You can update this at any time before you send the campaign. To disable the throttling, you can untick the ‘Control send speed?’ box.
